USS Biz Trek Activity #12: Advertising Flyers

By now you’ve had a chance to study your competitors’ advertising methods and collect samples of their flyers, brochures, and business cards. Now take a closer look at their flyers. What do you like or not like about them? What design techniques and wording are most appealing?

Loggin’ On

Use your competitors’ flyers and the checklist below to design your own advertising flyer. Save a sample of your flyer in the pocket of your USS Biz Trek log.

Checklist: Designing a Flyer

  • Get attention by focusing on how your product meets the needs of the customer. Put your sales slogan or major benefit statement in bold letters near the top of the page.
  • Support your major benefit statement with two or three additional benefits or reasons your customer needs your product.
  • Create urgency by offering a discount for a limited time only. State the terms of your discount and the date your offer expires.
  • Provide correct and easy-to-read information on how to contact you. If you want customers to phone you, be sure they can see the number at least several feet away from your sign/flyer.
  • Keep the number of words to a minimum and your design simple. Use only one main graphic or picture, and leave lots of open space between the parts of your design.
  • Choose colors and papers that are appealing to your target customers. (Are they young or old? Conservative or laid back?) Also, consider the season of the year. (Is it winter or summer? Thanksgiving or Fourth of July?)
  • Check your flyer carefully for spelling and grammar errors before you have it copied in quantities.
  • Get the most out of your flyers by placing them where the right people will read them. Always give flyers to your target customers first!
