USS Biz Trek Activity #16: Create Your Website

What’s the coolest way to market your product to everyone in the world? A Website, of course! Did you know that there are over 3,000,000 sites on the Internet today? You need to make yours one of them! It’s so easy!

Here’s how to get started:

  1. YoungBiz.com offers free Websites. To access this feature, go to the Survival Pak index on the right of this page. Click Free Websites.
  2. Next you will see a page that says, "A FREE Website (tell me more)." If you want to learn a little bit more about building a page on YoungBiz.com, click here. If you’re already sure you want to make your site, scroll down to get started!
  3. Do you see the sample URL (the Website’s address)? You need to decide what you’d like your URL to be. Try using the name of your business or, if that’s too long, an abbreviation of it. Delete the words "my name" in the text box, then enter the name you’d like to use and press Next.
  4. After you fill in your registration form, you’re ready to go! Click the Build My Site link on the left.
  5. Check out the 10 templates on the next page, decide which is best for you, and click on its graphic.
  6. On the next page, you’ll have to choose what elements you’d like on your site. Don’t want a Favorite Links page? Click it off! You don’t have to have anything you don’t want.
  7. When you’re done selecting elements, click the Next button and you’ll see a list of the pages you’ve chosen for your site. You’ll want to work on your home page first, since this is the page people will see when they come to your site. To get started, click Edit.
  8. When your page opens in the new window, start designing. You can change anything on the page, including the graphics. Just click the little red Edit buttons, then type away. When you’re done, click Save and follow the same procedure for the remaining pages.

More tips for Web design:

To add a personal touch to your site, surf to some other sites and look for free graphics, bars, buttons, and logos. Check out these sites:

Keep a floppy disk handy! Whenever you find a graphic you like, save it to your disk. Soon you’ll have your own file of art to build your site as much as you want.

Be certain to include your e-mail address on the home page — visitors need to know how to contact you. When you’re finished launching your site, make sure you give customers the address! Soon enough, you’ll have tons of new clients astounded by your Web design talent!
