Galactic Space Tour

Ready to take a look at one of this world’s most far out subjects? Then, look up — we’re talking about space — the final frontier.

Before you get started on the tour, print the Galactic Tour Scavenger Hunt Answer Sheet. Then, as you take the tour, look for the answers and write them on your answer sheet. After each stop on the tour, use your browser’s back button to return to this activity and get the next link in the tour.

Your first stop is NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA has been studying space for almost 42 years. Take your time and tour the site to find things that might interest you. Then, go back to the home page and answer Question 1 on your answer sheet. Next, check out all of the NASA Field Centers and their specialties. (Questions 3, 4, 5.)

The second site that you’re going to is Space.com. This site will give you information about what’s going on in the entire space industry. Tour the site a little to get familiar with it. Then, go back to the front page and click on the Spacekids section located in the menu to the left. After this, type your name and "Jupiter" for the planet’s name. When it prompts you, go to the link that reads, "Click here to explore the planets more". Take your time and look around. (Questions 1 and 2.) Now go back to the Spacekids front page and click Play and Do. (Questions 3, 4, and 5) Play a few games, have a little fun, then go on to the next stop on our tour.

Finally, go visit the site of Star Trek, the television epic that has lasted in one form or another for over 34 years. Take a minute to see what being a Trekkie is all about. Then go into the Star Trek library. (Questions 1, 2, and 3.) After looking around this section, go into the News section, which is located on the same menu to the left of the page. (If you’re "enterprising," the answers to Questions 3 and 4 won’t be hard to find.)

Whether it’s NASA trying to build new space ships, or someone wondering about the planets in our solar system, there is a need that humans have to know what’s out there. The makers of Star Trek and other science fiction shows saw that need and recognized a well-defined market in which to sell their products.

Finished with the tour? Get into a discussion group with fellow trekkers and talk about the products each of these sites offers. Do you think the writers of the original Star Trek series thought their shows would still be popular 30 years later? What has helped Star Trek stay alive for such a long time? Do you think it’s possible that you could create a company or product that keeps earning money for 30 years or more? What would it take?
