Welcome to Wall Street!Wall Street is the financial capital of the world. For more than 100 years, companies have come to Wall Street in New York City to raise capital to build highways, develop technology, and grow businesses. Wall Street is where the New York Stock Exchange is located. What is a stock exchange?A stock exchange is a gathering place where buyers and sellers meet to negotiate the prices of stocks and bonds. Companies who want to raise money by selling stocks and bonds go to the stock exchange on Wall Street looking for people who are interested in becoming investors. Stockbrokers are licensed to represent companies or individuals who want to buy and sell stock. Why should I care about investing?Every dollar you spend is an investment in something. Lets say you earn $100, for example, and use the money to buy a pair of roller blades. Then you go home, put on the roller blades, and go skating for an hour. Now how much are the roller blades worth? (A lot less than the $100 you invested!) This is an example of investing in something that decreases in value. The next time you get ready to spend money, consider investing in something that usually goes up in value like stocks and bonds. So where do I start?Knowledge of investing gives you more control of your financial future. Did you know that if you start investing just $20 a week when youre a teen, youll be a millionaire by age 65? One way to get started is to invest10% of the monthly profit from your business.
