Vocabulary

Having students write definitions from the dictionary and then use a word in a sentence is the most often abused way of teaching vocabulary. Language is interactive, and children learn using all their senses. Try some of these strategies in your classroom.

  • Charades Have one student "act out" a word while the rest of the class tries to guess what it is. This is fun to do in teams. Reward the winning team with extra quiz points.
  • Write Your Own Have the students define the terms in their own words. Then have them trade definitions with a partner. The partners have to match the definitions to each term.
  • Silly Associations Ask the students to associate vocabulary words with objects, color and holidays. Begin by asking them "If an entrepreneur was an animal, what animal would it be? What if it was a color? A holiday?" Have the students explain why.
  • Picture This Have the students choose a word, then draw a picture of it. Tell them to be a creative as they wish. You may want to do this activity right after Silly Associations.
  • Often, students are unfamiliar with many standard business terms.  Have them study our Glossary of terms.
