Dress to Impress!

When YoungBiz asked 12-year-old David Templin to draw something about dressing for success, the artist says he thought about it a while and then created the illustrations on this page. How did he know what dressing for success was all about? David says he just knew. "My parents always told me that if you really want to do good you need to have manners and not be sloppy," he explains.

About the guy on the left, David says that people would think, "Who is this bum? He is defiant and rebellious." The guy on the right is a definite improvement. "People would think he is a person who is willing to do anything for you - not just one time but continually. Someone who is willing to work hard and do a good job."

"I think successful dressing is dressing appropriately for the situation - nothing too skimpy, nothing too old-fashioned - a '90s classy professional look."

What Should I Wear?

To help you decide what to wear, YB offers these tips:

Casual: Casual wear includes nice jeans, khakis, nice T-shirts, polo-style shirts, and clean tennis shoes. This is appropriate for both males and females.

Professional Casual: For guys, nice slacks, shirts without ties, and leather lace-up shoes or loafers are acceptable. Girls should wear skirts or slacks with an appropriate blouse. Denim clothing and tennis shoes are not recommended.

Business Professional: This includes dress slacks with a pressed shirt and tie, jacket or sweater, and leather shoes for guys. For girls this includes dresses, suits with skirts or dress slacks, blouses, and leather shoes. Any jewelry or accessories should be conservative in style and design.
