Vacation!
Papa Spiff, Mama Spiff, and their three children (Biff, 18; Tiff, 13; and
Riff, 8) decide they all need a vacation, so they begin to plan a trip to Disney
World. Being a money-conscious family, they decide to budget each part, then use
the trip as a type of experiment in fund-raising and money conservation. Follow
them along on their journey, see what strategies they use to make their dream
vacation a reality, then plan your own money-conscious family
vacation!
The Spiff family plan to enjoy four days of uninterrupted
pleasure at Disney World. Papa Spiff will purchase four-day Park Hopper passes.
Riff's will only cost $142, but the rest will be $176. The total cost of tickets
will be $846, plus tax. Papa Spiff wants to make sure the tax is covered, so he
rounds the ticket price up to $1000.
Instead of staying at the resort
itself, they decide to get two rooms at a nearby hotel. The rates are cheaper,
and Papa can't stand to pass up some of their great deals. Two rooms for five
nights will cost $850, but Papa decides to round up again to cover the extra
tax. He decides to estimate the cost at $1,100.
Mama Spiff 's head is
spinning. They have spent $2,100, and now she has to find a way to feed her
hungry brood. Papa Spiff demands they eat all evening meals together as a
family, except one where he wants to treat Mama to a nice evening out. Four
evening family meals at a reasonable restaurant will run about $100 each, so
$400 plus tax and tips. Papa rounds that up to $500, then adds $200 to the total
for his dinner with Mama.
